Department Profile:

In Ayurved, the subject Kaumarbhritya Tantra encompasses and includes the Ayurvedic aspects of Pre-conceptional and Perinatal medicine, Childhood medicine, along with modern Neonatology and Pediatrics. The fact that ‘Kaumarabhritya is considered as the foremost branch amongst the basic eight specialties’ of Ayurveda, highlights its importance. The scope of the subject ranges from fetal medicine to obtain a healthy progeny, till late adolescence.

The department O.P.D. functions on both Ayurvedic and principles of modern pediatric therapeutic medicine along with an immunization programme as advised by the Government of India and also by the Indian Association of Pediatrics. It also has a well-equipped special neonatal care unit and a special pediatric Panchakarma set-up.

The department of Kaumarbhritya (Balroga) is a core clinical department of Ayurveda dedicated to the healthcare of infants, children, and adolescents. It integrates classical Ayurvedic pediatric principles with contemporary pediatric practices to promote holistic child health through education, patient care, research, and community service.

Academic Functions

  • Imparts theoretical, practical and clinical knowledge of Kaumarbhritya to the undergraduate and postgraduate students as per the curriculum framed by the apex council in sync with the NEP.
  • Teaches the monitoring of growth and development, nutrition, preventive pediatrics, and management of childhood diseases from Ayurvedic and modern perspectives.
  • Encourages ethical values, professionalism, and communication skills among students.
  • Conducts seminars, case discussions, tutorials, journal club, and academic updates to strengthen conceptual understanding.

Clinical Functions

  • Provides OPD, IPD, Panchakarma and emergency services for pediatric patients.
  • Manages chronic pediatric conditions using Panchakarma therapies, diet, lifestyle, and Rasayana treatment.
  • Provides practical & Clinical hands-on clinical training in pediatric case taking, examination, diagnosis, and management in Pediatrics
  • Trains students in neonatal care, growth monitoring, nutritional assessment, and preventive pediatrics.
  • Enhances skills through bedside teaching, ward rounds, on mannequins and OPD exposure.
  • Focuses on preventive pediatrics through Samskara, Lehana, immunization, counseling, and nutrition guidance.

Research Functions

  • Promotes research activities in Ayurvedic pediatrics to establish evidence-based practices.
  • Guides UG (SPARK) and PG (PG-STAR) research projects (research initiatives of the Apex Research Bodies in AYUSH System of Medicine) of Government of India, dissertations, and clinical case studies.
  • Supports publication, presentation, and innovation in pediatric healthcare.

Academic Programs & Teaching

Museum:

Rare, congenital anomaly specimens are restored in departmental museum. All knowledge enhancement displays are well displayed in the museum.

Departmental Strength:

Young, enthusiastic and nationally acclaimed faculty, trained at various national renowned institutes having up-to-date knowledge of the subject, willing to share it with the students. ICT based teaching.
Well-equipped Bal Panchakarma procedure room is maintained by the department. Various Panchakarma including Kerala Panchakarma Procedures and ancillary procedures are performed in this room by the post graduate scholars under the supervision and guidance of the staff.
The department boasts of a well-equipped, 10 bedded, level 2 NICU for the management of Preterm and Low birth weight babies and other neonatal complications. It is equipped with latest technical phototherapy machines, open care incubators (Warmers) and the respiratory support machinery. The unit is solely managed by the teaching faculty of the department.
The Department of AYUSH of the Government of India has sanctioned a research project for the study of utility of Ayurvedic medicine in children suffering from Cerebral Palsy.
Various displays are accessible to all students throughout the working hours to enhance their knowledge and concepts. The Rashtriya Ayurved Vidyapeeth, New Delhi had selected the department and sanctioned a 6-Day CME to be conducted for training the teachers of Kaumarabhritya from all over India which was conducted during September - October 2021.
The PG STAR scholarship by CCRAS has been awarded to two postgraduate students for conduction of their research project.

Unique Features:

Special OPD for weight/growth disorders, developmental disorders, and neurobehavioral disorders. Various cases of Cerebral Palsy, Autism, ADHD (attention deficit hyperactivity disorder), metabolic disorders, and congenital anomalies are managed successfully using Ayurvedic medicines and Panchakarma therapies.
Compulsory and optional vaccines are administered in special Immunization OPD that is arranged on designated days. Vaccination of around 500-600 children/month is done.
Facility of Ananta prashana / Suvarna- prashana (The Ayurvedic immunity enhancer) is available on the designated Pushya - Nakshatra day of every month.
Pediatric emergencies like convulsions, shock, stroke, meningitis, etc. are handled in departmental IPD. Use of Ayurvedic principles and practices like Abhyanga, Snana in the wards for neonates.
Dhupana (fumigation) of wards using various herbs or their extracts.

Research

The department conducts research in Ayurvedic pediatrics focusing on disease management, nutrition, preventive care, and neonatal health, contributing to evidence-based practices through publications, dissertations, and academic presentations.

Infrastructure and Facilities

The Department of Kaumarbhritya (Balroga) is equipped with adequate academic, clinical, and research infrastructure in accordance with the NCISM Minimum Standard Requirements (MSE) 2024, supporting quality education, patient care, undergraduate and postgraduate training. The department includes well-furnished faculty rooms, a departmental office, a separate seminar space, and ICT-enabled teaching facilities for effective academic delivery and understanding. Clinical training is supported by a separate Kaumarbhritya OPD, Suvarna Prashan and Vaccination OPD, pediatric examination area, pediatric Panchakarma area, growth monitoring equipment, and access to hospital IPD facilities for bedside teaching and ward rounds. Research infrastructure facilitates postgraduate dissertation work, including approved clinical drug trials, conducted under ethical guidelines with proper standard operating procedures, documentation and monitoring. Access to a central library and digital resources strengthens academic and research activities. The department also supports community-based pediatric programs, fulfilling preventive, promotive, and extension services.

Outreach and Extension Activities

The Department of Kaumarbhritya actively undertakes outreach and extension activities aimed at promoting child health, disease prevention, and community awareness through Ayurvedic principles. The department conducts public awareness programs on child nutrition, immunization, growth and developmental milestones, neonatal care, and prevention of common childhood disorders. Regular outreach initiatives include school health check-up programs, health camps, and parent education sessions, focusing on early detection of health issues and adoption of healthy lifestyle practices. The department also organizes community training and educational campaigns for parents, teachers, and healthcare workers on topics such as infant feeding practices, hygiene, adolescent health, and preventive pediatrics.

The department also conducts various outreach activities during the Poshana Saptah, Breast feeding Week and on the occasion of Children’s Day

  • Bharati Vidyapeeth College of Ayurved, Pune, hosted a workshop on “Scientific Writing & Journal Indexing” on 27th March 2026, strengthening research skills among participants.
  • Bharati Vidyapeeth (Deemed to be University) College of Ayurved organized an Awareness & Orientation Programme on Pharmacovigilance and ADR Reporting in AYUSH Systems on 25 March 2026 under the Ministry of AYUSH, with 140+ delegates focusing on ADR reporting and PV Cell practices.

  • Dr. Neha D. Raichurkar Wins 2nd Prize at Srotosummit 2026 Secured 2nd Prize in Poster Presentation (Faculty Category) at Srotosummit 2026, Tilak Ayurved Mahavidyalaya, Pune.
  • Dr. Shruti Bagewadikar Secures 2nd Prize in Paper Presentation Won 2nd Prize at Srotosummit 2026 for paper on Srotoshuddhi in Jeerna Amlapitta.
  • Prof. Dr Umesh Tekawade, HOD, Dept. of Rachana Sharir was awarded prestigious Maharshi Annasaheb Patwardhan Vaidyakeeya Puraskar, BG Ghanekar teachers award 2025 on 15 January 2026. The award was given by Vaidya Khadiwale Vaidyak Sanshodhan Sanstha recognizing his contribution in the field of Rachana Sharir and Ayurved.
  • Our students from final BAMS Miss Muskan Patil and Miss Trupti Nikam won first and second prize respectively at a National Level Video Making Competition organised by BVVS Ayurveda Medical College and Hospital, Bagalkot (Department of Kaumarbhritya). The topic was Ayurveda in Pediatric care. Both the students creatively presented references from different samhitas in the video which was very well appreciated. The students were guided by Dr. Madhura Phadtare, Assistant Professor, Department of Rasashastra Evam Bhaishajya Kalpana.
  • Dr. Pragati Toraskar, MD II year scholar of Department of Rasashastra evam Bhaishajyakalpana, BVDU College of Ayurved Pune,  has received first prize in national level e-poster competition organized to mark the National Pharmacovigilance week 2025. The competition was organized by Department of Rasashastra and Bhaishajyakalpana, Nangelil Ayurved Medical College, Kothamangalam, Ernakulam Kerala. She received guidance from Dr. Trupti Patil Bhole for the poster titled as Patient awareness for drug safety: ADR/AE - AYUSH
  • Proud Moment for Bharati Vidyapeeth (Deemed to be University) College of Ayurved. We are delighted to share that our college has secured 13th Rank (A Grade) in the National Rating and Ranking of Ayurveda Colleges (2025–26) conducted by NCISM and QCI–NABET.   • Dr. Chhavi Rosha presented a paper titled Pitta Prakriti as a Predictor of Local Cutaneous Reactions in Neonates: A Post-Hoc Subgroup Analysis from a Randomized Control Trial of a Novel Ayurvedic Topical Anaesthetic and Lidocaine Prilocaine Cream During Venipuncture at National Symposium on Pharmacovigilance, Shishu Suraksha-Rashtra Suraksha (Safe Care for Every Newborn and Every Child). The symposium was conducted at Gwalior and jointly organized by CCRAS, RARI Gwalior (PPvC) in collaboration with AIIA New Delhi (NPvCC) on 17 and 18 Sept. 25
