DEPARTMENT OF KRIYA SHARIRA

DEPARTMENT OF KRIYA SHARIRA

Bharati Vidyapeeth (Deemed to be University) College of Ayurveda, Pune — where classical treatises meet modern scholarship.

Overview:

The department focuses on the study of Kriya Sharir, which deals with the normal functioning of the human body. A sound understanding of normal physiology forms the foundation of this subject, as students will encounter pathological conditions in their advanced studies of Rog Nidan (Pathology) and Kayachikitsa (Ayurvedic Medicine). The knowledge gained in Kriya Sharir is essential for understanding and managing disease processes. The department emphasizes the study of Sharir, which, according to Ayurvedic principles, is constituted by Dosha, Dhatu, and Mala (“दोषधातुमलमूलं हि शरीरम् | सु.सू.१५/३”) forming the core framework of Kriya Sharir. As Ayurvedic physiology is based on the core ideas of Darshan Shastra (Indian Philosophy) rather than contemporary biophysics and biochemical principles, it is distinctive and unique in its approach, providing a comprehensive knowledge of human functioning.

3.1 Academic Programs & Teaching:

The Kriya Sharir Department offers extensive and well-structured academic instruction to undergraduate, postgraduate, and PhD scholars, promoting excellence in education, advanced learning, and research at every level of study. The syllabus includes classical foundation of Ayurvedic physiology along with essentials of biomedical physiology. It has theoretical as well as lab and OPD practicals components. Also, department contributes to DNYS (Diploma in Naturopathy and Yogic Science) education with basics of physiology.

Practical Training:
Kriya Sharir (Physiology) practicals at our institute offer a hands-on approach to understanding the functional aspects of the human body through Ayurvedic and Modern perspectives. Carefully structured sessions, guided by experienced faculty, integrate demonstrations, experiments, and interactive learning to strengthen conceptual clarity and clinical correlation. Well-equipped laboratories and systematic training ensure an engaging and effective learning experience for aspiring practitioners.

4.1 Research overview on areas:

Research overview:The department initiated its postgraduate program in 2003. The research work of scholars covers a balanced range of basic, applied, and community-based participatory research. These studies employ both traditional and modern methodologies, including innovative diagnostic devices such as Nadi Tarangini (a digital device that records and analyzes pulse patterns to assist Ayurvedic diagnosis) and software tools like AyuSoft (a computer-based system that helps practitioners diagnose diseases and plan Ayurvedic treatments based on classical principles).

Infrastructure and Facilities

The department is well equipped with all necessary charts, specimens, and models required for teaching and research purposes. The facilities include advanced instruments such as a trinocular microscope for enhanced visualization by all students, Nadi Tarangini, and a spirometer.

Modern instruments like the kymograph, response time analyzer, and spirometer are routinely used in experimental work to explore the fundamentals of Ayurveda. The department was also a pioneer in adopting the Harvard Step Test as a quantitative assessment tool for Bala Pareekshana practicals.

In addition, the department has developed innovative teaching–learning models. Notable examples include a model demonstrating the ‘Formation of Urine in the Kidney’ and a comprehensive set of ‘Cardiovascular and Respiratory System MCQs

6.1 Pharmacovigilance cell

Department coordinated very actively and enthusiastically in the ‘Desh Ka Prakriti Parikshan’ campaign, the initiative of Ministry of AYUSH, GoI and NCISM New Delhi. Our college UG/PG students and faculty actively participated in this campaign where a citizen’s Prakriti Parikshan was done by Ayurveda volunteer using a mobile application. It was a monthlong drive concluded on 25/12/2025. We are proud that on last day our college Bharati Vidyapeeth Deemed University College of Ayurved ranked 8th in state of Maharashtra in terms of strike rate (Total Prakriti Parikshan/ total volunteers). In this outreach activity our college students did Prakriti Parikshan of 77680 citizens whereas our faculty did that of 1247 citizens, amounting to a total figure of 78927 as on 25/12/2024. This was done as students visited home to home and public places. We had arranged stall for same at Kids festival organized by Pune Municipal Corporation at Sarasbag, Pune. Pune Muncipal Corporation appreciated our work and awarded with us Certificate and trophy. After that, the ‘Prakriti Parikshan 100 Days Campaign’ was launched by State Government, in which each college was expected to do Prakriti Parikshan in 3 villages in Jan, Feb and March of 2025. Our college selected Nasrapur, Velha and Pasli villages from Pune district and did Prakriti Parikshan of total 1557 citizens in these villages in these 100 days and report was submitted to Director, AYUSH Government of Maharashtra. Department of Kriya Sharir coordinated this whole outreach activity. Prof. Dr. Prasad Pandkar worked as Nodal officer for same.

On the occasion of the birth anniversary of Founder Chancellor and the birthday of Pro Vice-Chancellor of BVDU, Healthcare and Awareness programmes are organized. Among these, a Prakruti and Nadi Parikshan camp is conducted using the Nadi Tarangini instrument, guiding participants toward adopting Dinacharya and Prakruti-anurupa Aahar-Vihar. This year it was organised on 11th January 2026 under the presence of Dr. Neeta Patil Padsalge and Dr. Srushti Jadhav along with PG students.

Events Organized

On the occasion of Sanskara – PG Orientation, the Department of Kriya Sharir organized a guest lecture by Vd. Prama Joshi on “Sthoola–Sookshma Dosha Viveka” on 31st December 2025. The lecture was attended by the Principal, faculty members, postgraduate students, and a few undergraduate students. An expert in Darshana Shastra and Vedanta, Vd. Prama Joshi explained the distinction between the Sookshma (subtle) and Sthula (gross) aspects of Dosha and highlighted their clinical relevance and application in Ayurvedic practice.
Department had successfully conducted 6 days National level RoTP (26-31 October 2009) for teachers in Kriya sharir funded by AYUSH (Ministry Of Health And Family welfare, Govt of India, New Delhi). 30 participants were benefitted. 12 resource persons were invited from different sections of Country.
Department also had conducted 3-day National level Interactive workshop in Kriya Sharir (19-21 March 2010) funded by Rashtriya Ayurved Vidyapeeth, AYUSH (Ministry Of Health And Family welfare), New Delhi.
