DEPARTMENT OF KAYACHIKITSA

Ayurveda Toxicology, Forensic medicine & Medical Jurisprudence

Department of Kayachikitsa (Internal Medicine)

Kayachikitsa is the foundational clinical discipline of Ayurveda, forming the basis for core therapeutic approaches including Shamana (internal medicine) and Shodhana (purificatory therapies). The Department of Kayachikitsa is dedicated to the holistic diagnosis, management, prevention, and rehabilitative care of systemic, lifestyle, and chronic disorders through classical and integrative Ayurvedic principles. Emphasis is placed on the correction of Agni, balancing of Doshas, and restoration of metabolic harmony at the tissue (Dhatu) level, rather than mere symptomatic management.

The department provides comprehensive clinical training in the application of Ayurvedic diagnostics such as Nidana and Samprapti, combined with experiential learning through OPD and IPD services, including specialty clinics for lifestyle disorders, chronic pain, geriatrics, and skin diseases. Special efforts are undertaken to train students in the Ayurvedic understanding and management of contemporary and emerging health challenges such as diabetes mellitus, cancer, HIV/AIDS, COVID-19 and post-COVID conditions, along with various dermatological and systemic disorders, using evidence-based Ayurvedic medicines and therapies.

As a core branch of Ashtanga Ayurveda, the department supports UG (BAMS), PG, and PhD programs, actively promotes clinical and translational research, and contributes significantly to community health services, preventive healthcare initiatives, and academic scholarship, thereby integrating classical wisdom with modern healthcare needs.

Academic Programmes and Teaching

The department conducts a wide range of structured academic activities to ensure comprehensive theoretical knowledge and practical clinical exposure. These include regular classroom lectures, practical sessions, bedside clinical demonstrations, and hands-on training in medical procedures. Clinical teaching is further strengthened through case presentations and discussions.

To enhance super-specialty exposure and interdisciplinary learning, students are taken for super-specialized clinical visits and educational visits to different hospitals. The department also actively organizes academic programs on special days of national and clinical importance.

Additionally, guest lectures by eminent academicians and clinicians are regularly arranged to update students with recent advances and clinical perspectives in the field.

Research and Scholarly Output

RESEARCH OVERVIEW (AREAS & OUTCOMES) : The proposed and completed research works primarily focus on the clinical and pre-clinical evaluation of Ayurvedic and herbal formulations in lifestyle and degenerative disorders such as hypertension, diabetes, osteoarthritis, cardiovascular diseases, cholelithiasis, asthma, and diabetic neuropathy. The studies assess therapeutic efficacy, safety, tolerability, and treatment adherence through OPD-based, randomized controlled, and exploratory clinical trial designs. Pre-clinical investigations validate pharmacological actions of herbal leads, while clinical trials generate evidence for disease-specific symptom reduction and metabolic control. Comparative evaluations with standard medications establish the relative effectiveness of Ayurvedic interventions. Overall, the outcomes aim to provide scientific validation, safety profiling, and integrative therapeutic options for chronic non-communicable diseases.
