The Department of Panchakarma is a key clinical and academic department dedicated to the science and practice of Shodhana Chikitsa, the cornerstone of Ayurvedic detoxification and systemic purification. The department focuses on restoring dosha equilibrium, enhancing metabolic efficiency, and promoting long-term health through structured Panchakarma interventions .The department blends classical Ayurvedic wisdom with modern interdisciplinary perspectives like pre evaluation of Patient before panchakarma with scientific biomarkers, investigations like x ray, MRI, etc whichever necessary for patients.
It emphasizes standardized procedures, patient safety, and evidence-based practice. It plays a vital role in undergraduate and postgraduate education, clinical services, and research activities.

Clinical Services and Patient Care
From a clinical standpoint, Panchakarma is a systematic and individualized therapeutic approach aimed at disease management, detoxification, and restoration of physiological balance. All Panchakarma therapies are prescribed only after a detailed clinical assessment, including Prakriti, Vikriti, disease stage, patient strength, and associated systemic conditions.
The department follows classical Ayurvedic protocols while maintaining hospital-grade standards of hygiene, safety, and patient monitoring. Each procedure is performed under the supervision of qualified Ayurvedic physicians with appropriate:
- Purva Karma (Pre-procedure preparation)
- Pradhana Karma (Main therapeutic intervention)
- Paschat Karma (Post-procedure care and follow-up)

Department Facilities & Clinical Strengths
- The Panchakarma Treatment Centre provides services to OPD patients for 8 hours daily (9:00 AM – 5:00 PM), considering the convenience and work schedules of patients.
- The department manages a large number and wide variety of patients through both Outpatient (OPD) and Inpatient (IPD) services.
- A dedicated team of 12 trained Male and Female Panchakarma Therapists ensures quality patient care and therapy administration.
- The department is further supported by two full-time Physiotherapy Doctors, providing integrated rehabilitation and patient recovery services.
Practical Training in Panchakarma
The Panchakarma Department provides structured and hands-on practical training to undergraduate and postgraduate students, enabling them to develop clinical competence in classical Ayurvedic detoxification and therapeutic procedures. Training is conducted under the close supervision of experienced Panchakarma physicians and faculty members, ensuring adherence to classical Ayurvedic principles, standard operating procedures, and patient safety norms.
Key Components of Practical Training
- Patient Evaluation: Training in comprehensive patient assessment, including Prakriti–Vikriti analysis, diagnosis, and individualized treatment planning.
- Purva Karma Procedures: Practical exposure to preparatory therapies such as Snehana (oleation) and Swedana (sudation), including indications, techniques, and monitoring.
- Pradhana Karma Procedures: Supervised performance and observation of the five principal Panchakarma therapies—Vamana, Virechana, Basti, Nasya, and Raktamokshana.
- Paschat Karma Care: Post-procedure management, dietary planning (Samsarjana Krama), follow-up care, and lifestyle counselling.
- Clinical Documentation: Maintenance of case records, treatment sheets, procedure notes, and clinical documentation as per institutional protocols.
- Outcome Assessment: Observation and evaluation of treatment outcomes, patient response, and management of complications whenever required.
Training Objectives

The Panchakarma Department conducts focused research on disease-specific Panchakarma therapies for conditions such as musculoskeletal disorders, neurological illnesses, gastrointestinal diseases, metabolic syndromes, gynaecological conditions, dermatological disorders, and lifestyle-related ailments. Research emphasizes individualized treatment planning based on Prakriti, Vikriti, disease stage, and patient strength. Clinical outcomes are systematically documented to assess therapeutic efficacy, safety, and long-term benefits of Panchakarma interventions.

Infrastructure and Facilities
Departmental Infrastructure
The Departmental Museum displays a variety of instruments, models, and educational charts related to Panchakarma. Various models demonstrating different types of Swedana procedures such as Kuti Sweda and Holaka Sweda, along with models of Shirodhara and Abhyanga, are available for teaching and demonstration purposes.
The museum also exhibits important Shodhana Dravyas including Vamaka Dravyas such as Madanphala and Jeemutaka, as well as ingredients used in Vamanopaga Kashaya like Yashtimadhu coarse powder. Various Virechana and Basti Dravyas are also displayed.
Traditional Panchakarma instruments such as Basti Netra, Putaka, Pradhamana Nasya Yantra, and Gokarna are showcased. Instruments used for Raktamokshana, including Shringa Yantra and Alabu Yantra, are also part of the museum collection.
Departmental Strength
- Faculty members are highly qualified, experienced, and actively involved in teaching, clinical practice, and research. Most faculty members have completed their Doctorate (Ph.D.) in Panchakarma.
- The Executive Panchakarma Centre caters to foreign and VIP patients and also provides training opportunities for western medical practitioners and international healthcare professionals.
