Role and Key Functions of the Department :

Academic program and teaching:

The department offers Undergraduate, Postgraduate, and Doctoral (PhD) academic programs and adopts problem-based teaching and learning (PBL) methodologies that are ideally suited to the hands-on and applied aspect of Rasashastra Evam Bhaishajya Kalpana. It enables students to effectively translate classical theoretical concepts into practical, real-world Ayurvedic pharmaceutical solutions.

Practical Training:

UG and PG students receive intensive hands-on training in the attached undergraduate laboratory, quality control laboratory, and teaching pharmacy. They actively participate in the preparation, standardization, and quality assurance of more than 100 classical and proprietary Ayurvedic formulations. Students are gaining practical exposure to raw material processing, dosage-form development, in-process quality checks, and final product evaluation. This integrated training bridges classical pharmaceutical principles with contemporary quality standards, ensuring strong technical competence and industry-ready skills.
The department organizes regular educational visits and pharmacy training to GMP-certified Ayurvedic pharmacies such as Ayurved Rasashala, Leadgen Pharma, Arya Ayurved Pharmaceuticals etc and NABL drug testing laboratories, providing students with exposure to industry standards, Good Manufacturing Practices, quality control procedures, and large-scale pharmaceutical operations.

Research overview on areas:

The department commenced its postgraduate program in 2004, with research primarily focused on the development of monographs for various Ayurvedic formulations, encompassing standardization, preclinical, and clinical studies.
The thrust area of the department focuses on the design and development of innovative dosage forms of Ayurvedic dietary and medicinal products [fermented Ayurvedic products, cosmeceuticals & herbomineral] addressing key societal health problems such as metabolic disorders, hair-related conditions, mental health disorders, and cognitive impairments. A major research emphasis is also specified on bioavailability and bio accessibility studies of metallic and calcium-based Bhasma formulations. Research works planned for Ph.D. students focuses on generation of IPR; two patents on hair gel and Mudga Yusha have been published on 2024 and 2025.
The Department conducts collaborative research with reputed academic institutions, national laboratories, and industry partners. Collaborations include the Pharmacology Department of Medical College, Poona College of Pharmacy, College of Engineering, IRSHA, Department of Physics, SPPU, and industries such as Ayurveda Rasayani, Pharmaza Herbals, Shri Dhootapapeshwar Ltd., and Punarvasu Aushadhalaya. National laboratories including RIFTR, NCL, C-MET, support advanced interdisciplinary research integrating Ayurveda with modern scientific approaches.

INFRASTRUCTURE AND FACILLITIES:

Department comprises of laboratories including Quality control laboratory, museum and a separate teaching pharmacy unit.

MUSEUM:

The Department maintains a well-organized museum with systematically displayed specimens of Ayurvedic metals, minerals, and herbal drugs to facilitate clear understanding and accurate identification for undergraduate and postgraduate students. Rare herbal and mineral samples support learning of ideal raw drug standards.
The museum also comprises fiberglass models of traditional instruments used for demonstration. An extensive collection of raw samples of Abhraka (mica), selected precious and semi-precious stones are displayed in museum. Rare specimens of metals and minerals donated by alumni further enrich the collection.
Pictorial charts aid quick conceptual revision of subject and a model of a traditional Rasashala is helping to enhance understanding of classical Ayurvedic pharmaceutical layout and workflows.

LABORATORIES:

The well-equipped laboratory comprising traditional and modern machines provide hands-on training to undergraduate and postgraduate students in the preparation of traditional Ayurvedic as well as modern innovative dosage forms. The department additionally maintains a fully equipped Quality Control laboratory wherever undergraduate students are trained in testing of Ayurvedic formulations, while postgraduate students are given independent access for research activities.

TEACHING PHARMACY

The Teaching Pharmacy is a key asset of the department, it serves as a dynamic training environment where students gain hands-on experience in the preparation, compounding, and management of pharmaceutical products under guided supervision.
The facility is fully equipped with specialized machinery and instruments dedicated to various sections of pharmaceutical practice. These include equipment for raw material processing, weighing and blending, granulation, tablet compression, capsule filling, liquid formulation, quality control testing, packaging, labelling, and proper storage. The structured layout of the Teaching Pharmacy ensures that students are exposed to the complete pharmaceutical production cycle-from raw material handling to the final finished product.
It strengthens students ‘understanding of pharmaceutical processes, also builds confidence in handling equipment, managing workflow, maintaining hygiene standards, and ensuring product quality.

Outreach and Extension Activities

Dr Madhuri Pawar is an active member of ‘Sharada Shakti’, an organization working for women empowerment.
The Department of Rasashastra and Bhaishajya Kalpana regularly hosts international students for structured academic training and advanced learning in the classical methodologies of Ayurvedic pharmaceutical formulations under the guidance of Dr. Trupti Patil.

Testimonials

"

With deep respect and heartfelt gratitude, I express my sincere appreciation to my respected teachers and the Department of Rasashastra and Bhaishajya Kalpana at Bharati Vidyapeeth (Deemed to be University) College of Ayurveda. My postgraduate journey here was a transformative phase that shaped not only my academic knowledge but also my ethical values, scientific temperament, and professional confidence.
A defining highlight of my MD training was my experimental animal study. Undertaking this project was initially challenging, yet the constant encouragement, technical guidance, and moral support from my teachers gave me the confidence to pursue it with dedication and integrity. From study design, ethical approval, and experimental execution to data interpretation, my mentors stood firmly by me, enabling me to successfully complete the project with scientific rigor. This experience deeply strengthened my research mindset and instilled in me a sense of responsibility towards ethical and evidence-based Ayurvedic research.
The department offered excellent infrastructure and research-oriented facilities, including a well-equipped quality control laboratory and dedicated pharmaceutical sections for processing and incineration of metals and minerals. Interactive teaching methods, academic discussions, and educational field visits, along with one-month hands-on training at a GMP-certified pharmacy, provided valuable practical exposure and strengthened our understanding of contemporary practices.
An open academic environment that encouraged freedom of expression and critical thinking was a unique strength of the department. Opportunities to teach undergraduate students helped refine my communication and teaching skills.
I remain deeply indebted to my teachers for their unwavering guidance and inspiration. I feel proud to be an alumnus of the Department of Rasashastra and Bhaishajya Kalpana, Bharati Vidyapeeth College of Ayurveda, which laid a strong research-oriented foundation for my professional journey and continues to guide my work through Vriddhi Garbhasanskar.

They put in all their efforts to inculcate values of work ethics, discipline, and research orientation within us. We had a spacious department which was designed to suit out post graduate curricular activities. There were specific sections; viz quality control lab with well-equipped instruments for analysis of physicochemical parameters of raw herbs and processed formulations..A separate section for incineration of metals and metalloids was provided. The teaching techniques were very engaging and thought provoking. Power point presentations were helpful tool as many topics were made simpler and interesting. Field trips were arranged to different pharmacies. Besides, a one month- hands on training in a GMP accredited pharmacy provided us a platform to visualize and experience current practices. Conducting demonstrations of drug processing for undergraduates helped us acquire teaching skills as a futuristic career approach. Freedom of expression was a distinct feature given by our teachers which helped us grow. I am totally indebted to my wonderful teachers and proud to be a part of RSBKV.
