Integrated management of patients is a hallmark of the department, wherein classical Ayurveda principles are judiciously combined with contemporary medical practices to ensure safe, effective, and patient-centered care. This integrative approach enables comprehensive diagnosis, rational treatment planning, and improved maternal and neonatal outcomes.

In teaching, the department places strong emphasis on clinical experience-based learning. Students are trained through theory lectures, bedside clinics, case discussions, and hands-on clinical exposure, ensuring a seamless integration of knowledge and practice. Ayurveda textual concepts are taught in depth, with systematic explanation of Shastra-based fundamentals, along with their probable modern scientific interpretations, facilitating clarity and clinical applicability. Bedside clinics further reinforce these concepts by correlating classical descriptions with real-time clinical findings.

The department has made significant contributions in the field of research, with several research papers published in reputed national and international journals. More than 100 postgraduate theses have been successfully completed under the guidance of experienced faculty, reflecting the department’s strong research culture and academic rigor.

In addition, the department has developed proprietary formulations specifically aimed at the management of antenatal and postnatal conditions, contributing to evidence-based Ayurveda maternal care.

The department is also deeply committed to its social responsibility and actively contributes to community health by conducting women’s health awareness programs in various parts of the city. Faculty members are dedicatedly involved in running satellite OPDs for the benefit of the rural population, ensuring accessibility to quality healthcare services.

In addition, regular health camps are organized by the department to promote preventive care and improve the overall health status of society.

Academic

The Department of Stree Roga-Prasuti Tantra undertakes systematic teaching and training in Ayurvedic Obstetrics and Gynecology for undergraduate and postgraduate students.

Academic activities include classroom teaching, case presentations, and clinical demonstrations based on classical texts and contemporary scientific knowledge.

The department promotes research through dissertation work, clinical studies, and scholarly publications, with an emphasis on evidence-based Ayurvedic practice. Continuous academic enrichment is ensured through workshops, guest lectures, and academic discussions aimed at developing competent and ethical practitioners.

Clinical

The Department of Stree Roga-Prasuti Tantra provides comprehensive Ayurvedic obstetric and gynecological care. Clinical services include antenatal, intranatal, and postnatal care.

Gynecological disorders, infertility, and menstrual abnormalities are managed using classical Ayurvedic principles.

Modern diagnostic tools are used alongside Ayurvedic therapies for accurate assessment. Clinical training through OPD and IPD strengthens students’ practical skills while ensuring holistic women’s healthcare.

Practical Training

The department provides structured practical training to undergraduate and postgraduate students. Students gain hands-on experience through OPD and IPD postings.

Training includes case taking, clinical examination, and patient management under faculty supervision. Practical exposure is provided in antenatal, intranatal, and postnatal care.

Students are trained in Ayurvedic local procedures such as Yoni Prakshalana, Yoni Pichu, and Uttarbasti.

Students accompany faculty during health talks and health camps. This exposure trains them to independently conduct such programs in their future practice and clinics.

Research

The Department of Stree Roga-Prasuti Tantra actively engages in research aimed at addressing women’s health problems of social importance.

Research focuses on conditions where effective or definitive treatment options are limited in modern medicine, such as infertility, menstrual disorders, pregnancy-related complications, and chronic gynecological conditions.

Clinical and observational studies are conducted based on classical Ayurvedic principles with scientific methodology.

The department promotes evidence-based research to develop safe, affordable, and holistic treatment approaches beneficial to society.

Research & Scholarly Output

Research Overview & Areas

The Department of Stree Roga-Prasuti Tantra has actively conducted numerous postgraduate dissertation-based research studies in the domains of Streeroga and Prasuti Tantra, addressing both classical Ayurvedic concepts and contemporary health challenges.

Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS), a major emerging health concern, has been the focus of approximately six research studies, evaluating various treatment modalities including Panchakarma therapies combined with oral medications.

Research has also been undertaken on menorrhagia, oligomenorrhea, and Ayurvedic management of Intrauterine Growth Restriction (IUGR), with nearly eight completed studies highlighting effective integrative management approaches.

A unique Ayurvedic formulation for ovulation induction has been developed and successfully patented by the department, demonstrating innovation in reproductive healthcare.

Additional research work includes studies on post-labour pain management and enhancement of lactation, contributing to improved maternal care practices.

Faculty members have also designed a novel vaginal fumigation (Dhoopan) instrument and developed therapeutic formulations administered during antenatal and postnatal periods, benefiting thousands of mothers treated at Bharati Ayurveda Hospital.

Departmental Infrastructure

The Department of Stree Roga-Prasuti Tantra is housed in a well-planned and adequately equipped area measuring 152.83 square meters within the college premises.

The department includes dedicated spaces for faculty, teaching rooms, postgraduate activities, and academic discussions, ensuring a conducive environment for teaching and learning.

Adequate infrastructure is available for undergraduate and postgraduate training, clinical case discussions, seminars, and research-related work.

The department is designed to support academic, clinical, and research activities efficiently, contributing to effective teaching, skill development, and overall academic growth of students.

Clinical and Practice Areas

The Department of Stree Roga-Prasuti Tantra is supported by well-established hospital facilities designed to provide comprehensive obstetric and gynecological care.

The department has a dedicated Outpatient Department (OPD) area measuring 39.96 square meters, which facilitates systematic patient evaluation, consultation, and follow-up.

The Inpatient Department (IPD) covers an area of 427.26 square meters, offering spacious, well-ventilated wards that ensure patient comfort, safety, and effective clinical monitoring.

The department is equipped with a Labour Room of 50 square meters, enabling safe conduct of normal deliveries and obstetric care.

A separate Operation Theatre (OT) is available for gynecological and obstetric procedures, maintaining required standards of asepsis and patient safety.

In addition, dedicated rooms for Uttarbasti and Dhupan procedures are provided, supporting the practice of specialized Ayurvedic therapies.

The well-ventilated IPD, along with specialized procedure rooms, ensures a conducive environment for patient care, clinical training, and practical learning for students, thereby strengthening both service delivery and academic objectives of the department.

Outreach & Extension Activities

Community Health Outreach

The Department of Prasuti Tantra & Stree Roga plays a crucial role in public healthcare, with special emphasis on women’s health promotion and disease prevention.

The department actively engages in community outreach and health education programs aimed at creating awareness among women across various age groups.

Through these sustained public health initiatives, the department contributes meaningfully to the improvement of women’s health, quality of life, and community wellbeing.

School and College Programmes

The department addresses adolescent health issues by educating young girls about common problems during adolescence and their Ayurvedic management, thereby promoting healthy physical and psychological development.

Significant efforts are directed toward spreading awareness on PCOD/PCOS and menopausal health, highlighting lifestyle modification, dietary regulation, and Ayurvedic therapeutic approaches.

Women’s Health Initiatives

Regular awareness lectures and interactive sessions are conducted on cervical cancer and breast cancer, focusing on early detection, screening, and preventive strategies.

In addition, the department regularly conducts awareness programs on anemia in women, focusing on its causes, prevention, and management through appropriate diet, lifestyle modifications, and Ayurvedic principles.

Maternal Health Care Initiatives

To promote maternal and child health, the department celebrates Breastfeeding Week every year and conducts educational activities to emphasize the importance of exclusive breastfeeding for both mother and child.

Breastfeeding Week

The Department of Stree Roga-Prasuti Tantra celebrates Breastfeeding Week every year during the first week of August.

The department organizes educational lectures for undergraduate and postgraduate students delivered by renowned speakers. Charts and visual displays are exhibited to promote and encourage breastfeeding.

Special lectures with demonstrations of nutritious homemade recipes are conducted for Anganwadi Sevikas. Postgraduate students actively participate by performing skits to effectively convey the importance of breastfeeding to the community.

Poshan Pakhawada

The Department of Stree Roga-Prasuti Tantra actively participates in Poshan Pakhawada by organizing educational lectures and practical demonstrations focused on women’s nutritional health.

Lectures are conducted on the role of nutrition in the prevention and management of anemia, with emphasis on affordable and locally available dietary measures. Demonstrations of simple home remedies and diet preparations are given to promote nutritional awareness.

Special sessions on Garbhini Paricharya highlight the importance of balanced nutrition during pregnancy for maternal and fetal well-being.

The program also includes lectures on Polycystic Ovarian Disease (PCOD), focusing on dietary regulation and lifestyle modification as per Ayurvedic principles. These activities aim to improve community awareness and promote sustainable nutritional practices for women’s health.

International Conference

The Department of Stree Roga-Prasuti Tantra, Bharati Vidyapeeth (Deemed to be University), College of Ayurved & Hospital, Pune, participated in SHUSHRUTEE 2024 – “The Womb and Wound Saga on Infertility”, organized by the NIMA OBGY Society Maharashtra in association with MAM’s Sumatibhai Shah Ayurved Mahavidyalaya, Pune and Bharati Vidyapeeth (Deemed to be University), College of Ayurved, Pune.

The conference was held from 3rd to 5th May 2024 and was attended by nearly 900 delegates, providing a multidisciplinary platform integrating modern gynecology and Ayurvedic approaches to infertility.

The first day was dedicated to a postgraduate workshop focusing on hands-on training and scientific learning. Sessions included pelvitrainer-based surgical skill training, microscopic pathological demonstrations of semen analysis, and practical demonstrations of Ayurvedic Sthanik Chikitsa procedures such as Uttarbasti (male and female), Kshar Karma, Pichu, Dhavan, and Dhupan.

On the second day, live demonstrations of infertility-related and fertility-conserving surgeries, including diagnostic laparoscopy, myomectomy, endometriosis surgery, colposcopy, and tuboplasty, were conducted by expert gynecologists. The inaugural function was held at Swojas Palace, Manjari, followed by a cultural program in the evening.

Bharati Vidyapeeth College of Ayurved, Pune, secured second prize in both the fashion show and group dance competitions.

The third day featured expert guest lectures by national and international speakers on infertility management, ovulation induction, adenomyosis, endometriosis, male infertility, infertility and cancer, integrated treatment approaches, and medicolegal issues in OBGY practice.

The conference concluded with a valedictory session and prize distribution ceremony. Overall, SHUSHRUTEE 2024 served as a comprehensive academic, clinical, and cultural platform, enhancing knowledge, skills, and collaborative learning in infertility management.

Skill Development Course

“Abhyanga (Massage) Mata–Balak Arogya Santulan” is a certificate course organized by Bharati Vidyapeeth College of Ayurved and Hospital, Pune, designed for needy women to learn scientific and safe massage techniques for mothers and newborns.

The course covers postnatal care, precautions after delivery, diet, exercise, and yoga, and provides hands-on training to build confidence in mother and baby care.

On successful completion, candidates receive a certificate from Bharati Vidyapeeth, Pune, enabling them to work with institutes or offer home-based maternal and neonatal care services, thereby enhancing skills and livelihood opportunities.

Report on Visit of PG Nursing Students – 22nd February 2024

Bharati Vidyapeeth (Deemed to be University), College of Ayurved & Hospital, Pune, organized an academic visit for Postgraduate Nursing students on 22nd February 2024.

The visit was arranged to provide exposure to Ayurvedic obstetric and gynecological practices through clinical demonstrations and interactive discussions.

The program commenced with a demonstration of Vaginal Fumigation, followed by sessions on Pichu and Uttarbasti, highlighting their therapeutic applications in women’s health.

Students then participated in a Postnatal Care (PNC) ward round, gaining practical insight into postpartum management. After the lunch break, an interactive discussion session was conducted, allowing students to clarify concepts and exchange views on integrative healthcare practices.

The visit was informative and contributed to enhancing clinical understanding and interdisciplinary learning among the nursing students.

Report on Norway Nursing Student Exchange Program – 5th March 2025

The Department of Prasuti Tantra and Stree Rog, Bharati Vidyapeeth Ayurved Hospital, Pune, organized the Norway Nursing Student Exchange Program on 5th March 2025.

The program aimed to introduce Norwegian nursing students to Ayurvedic concepts and treatment modalities related to obstetrics and gynecology. The sessions were conducted by experienced faculty members and postgraduate students, combining theoretical orientation with practical demonstrations.

The program began with a practical demonstration of the Dhupan procedure, focusing on medicinal fumigation of the external genitalia and its role in maintaining hygiene and managing gynecological conditions.

This was followed by a formal welcome and introductory session highlighting the basic principles of Ayurveda and its integrative role in women’s healthcare.

Subsequent sessions included demonstrations of Vulval Irrigation (Parisechan) and Yoni Dhavan, where students were familiarized with medicated herbal preparations, their therapeutic benefits, and clinical applications.

The final session covered Yoni Pichu, emphasizing the preparation and use of medicated vaginal tampons in gynecological disorders. Detailed explanations regarding the selection of medicated oils and their benefits were provided, enhancing the students’ understanding of Ayurvedic local therapeutic procedures.

The primary objectives of the program were to educate nursing students about traditional Ayurvedic treatments for women’s health, provide hands-on exposure through demonstrations, and promote cross-cultural learning between Norway and India.

The exchange program was successfully conducted, fostering academic interaction, global collaboration, and a deeper appreciation of integrative healthcare practices in obstetrics and gynecology.
