The Department of Swasthavritta and Yoga focuses on preventive and promotive health through Ayurvedic principles of diet, lifestyle regulation, ethical conduct, and Yoga. It integrates Ayurveda with public health, lifestyle medicine, Yoga therapy, and integrative health sciences to address present health needs through education, clinical practice, and research, guided by evidence oriented and outcome based approaches, in alignment with the classical definition of health as described in Indian philosophical text

Role and Key Functions of the Department

Academic programs and teaching:

The Department delivers competency based undergraduate, postgraduate, and doctoral education in Swasthavritta and Yoga, focusing on preventive Ayurveda, Ayurvedic dietetics, lifestyle modification, Yoga-based health practices, and community oriented public health as envisaged in updated regulatory guidelines. Teaching learning integrates classroom instruction with case-based discussions, community postings, and experiential training to develop practical skills in lifestyle assessment, counselling, and health promotion.

A postgraduate MD program in Swasthavritta and Yoga has been running since 2004, preparing specialists in lifestyle management, community health, and Yoga-based interventions. A structured PhD program, initiated in 2012, nurtures advanced researchers in preventive Ayurveda, public health, and integrative Yoga. the department also conducted a Diploma in Naturopathy and Yogic Sciences during 2008–2009, contributing to capacity building in naturopathy and Yoga practices for health promotion.

Clinical

The Swasthyarakshana Outpatient department (OPD) offers preventive and promotive clinical services, including Yoga therapy, diet counselling, lifestyle guidance and risk‑factor assessment, along with dietary advice for in‑patients across departments. the Swasthyarakshana OPD and Yoga–naturopathy therapy centre together functions as skill‑based clinical training platforms where students learn to apply classical Ayurvedic principles to real‑world lifestyle and public‑health challenges with measurable outcomes.

Practical training

Students receive structured hands‑on training in Yoga practices, Dinacharya and Ritucharya (daily and seasonal regimens), Pathyapathya Ahara planning (Indicated and non-indicated food), stress‑management and health‑education activities, conducted in a dedicated Yoga hall and through community and school health programmes. This practical exposure prepares graduates to competently assess lifestyle, prescribe preventive regimens and deliver need‑based health education at individual, family and community levels.

Research

The department guides and conducts postgraduate dissertations and doctoral research on preventive health, Yoga interventions, lifestyle disorders and public‑health‑relevant Swasthavritta, aligning with the defined role of Swasthavritta and Yoga postgraduates as specialists in lifestyle management and public health. Research is designed to generate evidence for Ayurveda‑based lifestyle medicine, school and workplace health, and community wellness programmes, strengthening the academic and service activities of the department.

Research overview on areas, summary: The Department of Swasthavritta and Yoga has a vibrant research culture in preventive medicine, lifestyle disorders and integrative Yoga, naturopathy, with over 76 completed MD theses and several PhD projects anchoring its academic output. Faculty regularly publish in national and international journals, translating Ayurvedic concepts of diet, lifestyle and Achar Rasayana into contemporary public health and clinical practice. Research spans lifestyle and occupational health hazards, women’s health, geriatric care, stress and psychosomatic disorders, using tailored Pathyapathya (diet counselling), Yogic interventions and naturopathy based therapies.   • A well-planned departmental area of approximately 240 sq. metres houses specialized cabins for each faculty member, creating an environment conducive to mentoring, research guidance, and student interaction.
  • A functional museum with relevant instruments, charts, and models illustrates concepts of Swasthavritta, dietetics, Yoga, and public health, enriching competency-based teaching and self-directed learning.

Yoga and Practical Training Facilities

  • A spacious Yoga Hall of approximately 240 sq. metres, equipped with specialized Yoga props, mats, models, specimens, and charts, supports hands-on training in asanas, pranayama, relaxation techniques, and group sessions for students and patients.
  • The layout and equipment of the Yoga Hall facilitate structured practical sessions, small-group demonstrations, and therapeutic Yoga programs in alignment with modern teaching-learning approaches for Swasthavritta and Yoga.

Clinical and Practice Areas

  • The department runs a dedicated Swasthyarakshana OPD in the college hospital, where preventive, promotive, and lifestyle-related services such as Yoga therapy, diet counselling, and lifestyle guidance are provided under faculty supervision.
  • In addition to the OPD facility, a separate and well-defined area is available for Yoga and Naturopathy-based practice, enabling integration of clinical training with real-time patient care and supporting the development of practical competencies in lifestyle and public health-oriented Ayurveda.

Outreach & Extension Activities

Community Health Outreach

  • Regular Swasthyarakshana Camps are conducted in urban, rural, and semi-urban areas, offering lifestyle assessment, Yoga-based counselling, dietary guidance, and non-communicable disease (NCD) risk screening, with systematic follow-up through the Swasthyarakshana OPD.
  • Faculty members and students actively collaborate with local health authorities, NGOs, and AYUSH units for village adoption programmes, health melas, and observance of thematic events such as Ayurveda Day and International Yoga Day, promoting preventive and promotive healthcare at the community level.

School and College Programmes

  • The department organizes school health and college wellness programmes that include Yoga sessions, posture correction, adolescent health counselling, menstrual hygiene education, and guidance on Dinacharya and Ritucharya tailored to young individuals.
  • Structured modules on Healthy Lifestyle, Digital Detox, Stress Management through Yoga, and Ayurvedic Diet for Students are delivered through lectures, demonstrations, and interactive activities, encouraging healthy habits from an early age.

Geriatric and Women’s Health Initiatives

  • The department participates in university-organized geriatric health awareness programmes, offering health screening, lifestyle counselling, and simple Yoga practices designed for elderly individuals.
  • Women’s health assessment programmes focus on menstrual health, anaemia, metabolic disorders, and lifestyle-related conditions, integrating Ayurvedic dietetics, Pathya-Apathya counselling, and Yoga-based interventions across different stages of life.

Workplace and Institutional Wellness

  • Extension activities include workplace wellness programmes for university staff and partner institutions, covering ergonomics, desk Yoga practices, dietary guidance, sleep hygiene, and prevention of lifestyle disorders.
  • Need-based thematic programmes addressing obesity, hypertension, diabetes, and stress management are organized for various occupational groups, aligning Ayurvedic lifestyle guidance with modern occupational health requirements.

Health Education and IEC Development

  • The department develops and disseminates IEC (Information, Education and Communication) materials including brochures, posters, short videos, and digital resources on seasonal regimens, diet in common conditions, Yoga for mental well-being, and home-based healthcare practices.
  • Students actively participate in planning and conducting health education sessions during camps, OPD counselling activities, and community visits, enhancing their communication skills and public health orientation.

Training, Collaboration and Capacity Building

  • Faculty members conduct Continuing Medical Education (CME) programmes, workshops, and short-term courses for practitioners, teachers, and community health workers on Swasthavritta, Yoga, and lifestyle counselling, contributing to capacity building in preventive and promotive Ayurveda.
  • The department collaborates with schools, colleges, industries, local bodies, and AYUSH institutions to design joint outreach projects and long-term community wellness initiatives that advance Ayurveda-based public health.

  • Every year, large-scale Yoga programmes are organized featuring mass Yoga demonstrations, guided Yoga sessions at the college seminar hall and university grounds, expert lectures, and awareness activities.

  • Our students from final BAMS Miss Muskan Patil and Miss Trupti Nikam won first and second prize respectively at a National Level Video Making Competition organised by BVVS Ayurveda Medical College and Hospital, Bagalkot (Department of Kaumarbhritya). The topic was Ayurveda in Pediatric care. Both the students creatively presented references from different samhitas in the video which was very well appreciated.
