DEPARTMENT OF SAMHITA SIDDHANTA & SANSKRIT

DEPARTMENT OF SAMHITA SIDDHANTA & SANSKRIT

Bharati Vidyapeeth (Deemed to be University) College of Ayurveda, Pune — where classical treatises meet modern scholarship.

Academic & Philosophical Foundation

The Department of Samhita Siddhanta & Sanskrit at Bharati Vidyapeeth (Deemed to be University) College of Ayurveda represents the academic and philosophical foundation of Ayurvedic education, where the classical wisdom of Ayurveda is preserved, interpreted and advanced through structured teaching and research.

Ayurved Samhita denotes the classical medical treatises, composed in Sanskrit, which form the primary source of all Ayurvedic knowledge. The Department plays a pivotal role in initiating students into the scientific, logical and philosophical framework of Ayurveda, enabling them to understand the subject as a coherent medical science grounded in well-defined principles (Siddhanta) of Ayurved and Darshana Shastra (Indian Philosophy).

Functioning as the nodal and integrative department of the BAMS curriculum, the Department maintains academic continuity across all three major professional examinations of the undergraduate program. Teaching is imparted through five core subjects—Sanskrit evam Ayurved Itihas (Sanskrit and History of Ayurved), Padartha Vijnanam (Fundamental Principles of Ayurved and Quantum Mechanics), Samhita Adhyayan–I, II, III — ensuring strong conceptual clarity.

The Department offers advanced postgraduate and doctoral training in Ayurveda Samhita & Siddhanta, emphasizing classical textual interpretation, applied philosophy, research methodology and scholarly writing. Supported by a strong research ecosystem with numerous completed and ongoing M.D. and Ph.D. projects, funded studies, and national-level recognitions, the Department fosters independent scholars through active mentorship in thesis work, conference presentations and peer-reviewed publications.

A defining strength of the Department lies in its rich classical resources and learning infrastructure. The Department houses an extensive collection of original Sanskrit Samhitas, authoritative commentaries, rare Ayurvedic manuscripts, dictionaries and Koshas, including Triskandha Kosha. These resources are complemented by a Sanskrit Language Laboratory, a departmental museum with models, charts, and specimens and structured Samhita Parayana conducted across all professional years in all subjects- ensuring continuous engagement with primary texts and accurate Sanskrit comprehension.

Academic exposure is further enriched through interdisciplinary visits, institutional collaborations, guest lectures by eminent scholars, seminars, workshops, and scholarly competitions, enabling students to develop interpretative skills, academic confidence and professional competence beyond the classroom.

Through its commitment to classical authenticity, rigorous academics, and research-oriented training, the Department of Samhita Siddhanta & Sanskrit continues to serve as a centre for foundational and postgraduate Ayurvedic studies, attracting students who aspire to pursue advanced learning and research in Ayurveda Samhita & Siddhanta.

Whenever I hear the name Bharati Vidyapeeth College of Ayurveda, Pune, a gentle smile appears and my heart fills with pride- this is my college. The Samhita Siddhanta Department, with its systematic engagement with classical texts, authentic commentaries, and research-oriented approach, played a pivotal role in grounding my understanding of Ayurvedic fundamentals. The unwavering dedication of the faculty- especially Dr. Y. V. Joshi and Dr. M. P. Bhide- has been truly transformative.
