Unique Features

The department successfully performs a wide range of surgical procedures, from basic interventions such as abscess drainage to advanced surgeries including intracranial hematomas and laparotomies. Complex cases like hepatic hydatid cysts and pancreatic pseudocysts are routinely managed, along with orthopedic procedures ranging from closed fracture reductions to surgeries involving the neck of femur and the spine. In addition, urological and oncological surgeries are carried out with consistent success, demonstrating the department’s comprehensive surgical expertise.

Ayurvedic procedures like Kshara sutra, AGNIKARMA, raktamokshana etc. are also commendably performed.

Ancient procedures like AGNIKARMA are performed in an innovative manner. Ex. AGNIKARMA is performed with the help of modified Instrument, a electricity heated shalaka with sensor for measuring the temperature at the heated tip.

Achievements

Dr Rahul Kadam, faculty of department was awarded with ‘Ambegaon Bhushan Puraskar’ in 2013 for his medical and social services.

UNIQUE Ph.D. RESEARCH

Dr. Swapnil Tajane - B.A.M.S., M.S, (Shalya), Ph.D. Assi. Professor, BVDU College of Ayurved, Pune
This comparative clinical study is unique in its focused evaluation of Gandhak Rasayan as a post-operative management therapy in non-infective surgical cases. Unlike conventional studies that rely solely on modern analgesics and antibiotics, this research explores an Ayurvedic formulation for enhancing post-surgical recovery. It emphasizes wound healing, pain management, inflammation control, and overall patient well-being through a holistic approach. The study bridges classical Ayurvedic principles with contemporary clinical assessment parameters. Its comparative design allows objective evaluation against standard post-operative care. The research also highlights reduced dependency on synthetic drugs and their associated side effects. By documenting clinical outcomes scientifically, it contributes evidence-based support for Ayurvedic post-operative protocols. Overall, the study represents an integrative and innovative approach to modern surgical aftercare.

"Pursuing my MS in Shalyatantra at BVDU College of Ayurveda was an experience defined by academic rigor and social impact. The department provides a unique platform where research is not just a requirement, but a passion. Having access to the university’s extensive charitable hospital facilities allowed me to witness a high volume of diverse cases, particularly in advanced wound management and anorectal surgery.
The emphasis on evidence-based Ayurveda and the opportunity to conduct clinical trials in a well-equipped setup gave me a significant edge in my professional journey. I am deeply grateful for the faculty’s commitment to producing surgeons who are as compassionate as they are skilled."
