The Department of Shalakyatantra (Netra Roga along with Karna, Naasaa and Mukha roga) is a core clinical department of Ayurveda dealing with the prevention, diagnosis, and management of Urdhvajatrugata Vikaras —disorders of the eye ( Netra ), ear ( Karna ), nose ( Nasa ), throat ( Mukha–Kantha ), head ( Shira ), and oral cavity. We Shalakis deal with the diseases as well as treatment of Netra, Karna, Kantha, Naasaa, Mukha and Danta . Emphasis is laid on evidence-based practice, preventive healthcare, and functional restoration of sense organs, while providing structured undergraduate and postgraduate training. The department aims to deliver holistic, safe, and scientifically oriented healthcare through the combined strengths of Ayurveda and modern medicine. We the SHALAKI take care of sense organs. Teaching and training are aligned with current health needs, evidence-oriented practice, and outcome-based education.

Student Training and Practical Experience
Academic
The Department delivers competency‑based undergraduate, postgraduate and doctoral teaching in Shalakyatantra focusing on preventive Ayurveda, Ayurvedic dietetics, lifestyle modification, surgical procedures and community‑oriented public health as envisaged in the updated NCISM curriculum. Teaching–learning integrates classroom instruction with case‑based discussions, community postings and experiential learning to build practical skills in lifestyle assessment, counselling and health promotion.
Clinical
OPD, IPD, special clinics, procedures. The department provides comprehensive OPD and IPD services for disorders of the eye, ear, nose, throat, oral cavity, and head–neck region. Specialized clinics, diagnostic evaluations, and therapeutic procedures are conducted using classical Ayurvedic principles and Kriyakalpa treatment along with appropriate modern diagnostic support.
Practical training
Hands-on clinical and procedural training. Practical and clinical skill development forms a core component of departmental functioning. Students receive extensive hands-on training in patient examination techniques, diagnostic procedures, Kriyakalpas as well as case documentation and clinical record maintenance. Supervised clinical exposure enables students to develop procedural proficiency, clinical confidence, and decision-making abilities, preparing them for independent professional practice and higher academic pursuits.
Research
PG dissertations, PhD work, publications. The research work of scholars covers a balanced range of basic, applied, and community-based participatory research. These studies employ both traditional and modern methodologies, including innovative and integrative treatment methods for various Eye and ENT Disorders. Faculty and students are encouraged to undertake evidence-based research and interdisciplinary projects.

Clinical areas
- The department runs a dedicatedShalakyaOPD consisting ofNetraand ENT OPD in the teaching hospital, where preventive, promotive and lifestyle‑related services—are provided under faculty supervision.
- In addition to OPD space, a separate, well‑defined OT is available (ENT OT and Netra OT) for various surgical procedures.
Outreach and Extension Activities
Community health outreach
- Regular Netra and ENT camps are conducted in urban, rural and semi‑urban areas, offering guidance and treatment of various disorders., with systematic follow‑up through the Shalakya OPD.
- Faculty and students collaborate with local health authorities, NGOs and AYUSH units for promoting preventive and promotive health practices at community level.
- These camps are used for screening of patients requiring surgical procedures.
- Patients from these camps are then provided with various low cost operatives and free cataract surgeries in collaboration with Rotary Club, Pune.
School and college programmes
- The department organises school health and college wellness programmes that include education and guidance on daily and seasonal regimens tailored to young people.
- Young students are diagnosed for various ophthalmic and ENT disorders and adequate follow up is advised in the hospital OPD.
